Code Purple is a statewide movement that helps people who are homeless find a place of refuge or shelter when winter weather conditions become to dangerous for individuals or families to remain outside. Code Purple sites are staffed by trained volunteers and typically are located at Houses of Worship (churches) and targeted shelters that provide a safe, warm and short-term shelter which can last up to 24-hrs. CODE ACTIVATION: In New Castle County, the lead agency is Friendship House, which operates two Code Purple winter sanctuary programs -- one in Wilmington and the other in Newark at the Newark Empowerment Center. The Wilmington program is done in collaboration with the Salvation Army.

Wilmington - Code Purple occurs when weather conditions reach 10 degrees Fahrenheit or colder. Salvation Army offers Code Purple night sanctuary in its gym located at Fifth & Orange St. from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m (Nov 1 - Mar 31). Until Salvation Army opens, Friendship House offers Code Purple early evening sanctuary in the auditorium of the Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew located at 720 N. Orange Street from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. To provide people with a place to go when Code Purple site closes in the morning, Friendship House also offers early morning winter sanctuary. Weekdays: 226 N Walnut Street and Saturdays: 1101 N. Market Street and Sundays: 720 N. Orange Street.
Newark - When activated, Code Purple in Newark operates 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM in church space provided by eight different Newark faith communities on a rotating basis. Space in most places are limited to one or at most two rooms and can accommodate no more than 25 homeless guests.

CODE ACTIVATION: In Kent County, Code Purple is declared when the temperature or wind chill falls below 32 degrees. Purple flags and lights on buildings (Legislative Hall in Dover and other various Delaware Social service locations) will be another indicator that Code Purple in Kent County has been declared. Note: When activated, Code Purple sites are open from 5:00 pm to 7:30 am. Morning leave time is 7:00 am for each day listed.

Code Purple Sussex County shelter update as of January 1st, 2017
St. Luke’s Parish House, Gateway Fellowship, and Avenue UMC shelters will be open nightly from January 1st to March 12th, 2017.
St. Luke’s Episcopal Parish House: 202 N North Street, Seaford, DE. Call Nikki Gonzalez at 302-519-0024. In-take 7pm to 9pm. Dinner at 7pm. All those seeking shelter in Western Sussex County must arrive for in-take and then the women and children will be transported to Gateway Fellowship. St. Luke’s will shelter men only!
Gateway Fellowship: 8110 Cannon Road, Bridgeville, DE. Call Nikki Gonzalez at 302-519-0024. Women to meet at St. Luke’s Parish House for in-take 7pm to 9pm. Transportation will be available at 9pm and then 745am the next morning back to Seaford. This shelter will be for women and children only.
Milford: Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N Church Street, Milford, DE. Call Nikki Gonzalez at 302-519-0024. Men ONLY in-take at 7pm. Dinner served at 7:30pm.
Shepherd’s Office House: 408 N Bedford Street, Georgetown, DE. Call Nikki Gonzalez at 302-519-0024. When the low is forecasted to be at or below 32 ° the sanctuary opens for emergency shelter for the homeless. Advance notice will be given when this shelter is in use. Men ONLY in-take at 5pm-6pm. Dinner served at 6:30pm.
Georgetown Presbyterian: Call Pastor Mike at 302-344-1912 or leave a message at the Church 302-856-6842. This sanctuary is open for extreme weather and not held a certain temperature. MUST CALL AHEAD!
Eastern is unique as they operate cold weather month’s shelter. Their shelters are open and will remain open until spring regardless of the temperature.
Day Center: Rehoboth CRC open to the homeless during the day 302-227-1340.
