The Latin American Community Center (LACC) Youth Achievement Center will offer neighborhood-based academic and enrichment activities to 75 middle and high school students attending A.l. du Pont Middle School and A.l. du Pont High School in the Red Clay School District in New Castle County, Delaware. The mission of the program is to support the academic achievement, leadership development, and health and wellness of the primarily low-income Hispanic students who live in the City of Wilmington's Hilltop neighborhood. The program is offered at the LACC, a community-based organization with a 50 year track record of empowering the Latino communitythrough education, advocacy, partnerships and exceptional services. The LACC Youth Achievement Center's programs will be offered from PM M-F, and 10 AM- 6 PM on one Saturday a month. The program will include the following components: Academic Support: Small group and individual tutoring will be available to all students daily during the school year. The outcome of the Academic Support component of the program is improved students' academic achievement in English and Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, as measured by grades and standardized tests. Nutrition and Physical Fitness: Every evening, all students will be served a nutritious and delicious dinner that is prepared on-site and draws on the extensive culinary traditions of Latin America. Complementing the nutrition component of the program, the Youth Achievement Center will offer organized sports, including daily on-site structured physical education program in the LACC gym.
