The Justice of the Peace Courts have jurisdiction over civil cases in which the amount in controversy is not greater than $15,000. In landlord/tenant cases involving the possession of real property, Justices of the Peace have exclusive jurisdiction regardless of the amount in controversy. Justice of the Peace Courts are authorized to hear certain misdemeanors and most motor vehicle cases (excluding felonies) and may act as committing magistrates for all crimes. The Voluntary Assessment Center (739-6911) collects traffic fines.
